How much do we love our families? Despite the fact that at times, they can drive us crazy or perhaps be the cause of increased blood pressure, we love them to the moon and back. This familial love, as described by the Greek, is called Storge. There is slight debate however, on what defines family. Let’s be clear, as that distinction is absolutely yours, we are just of the belief that there is a difference between your “family of origin” and your “family of choice”.

Your family of origin is defined as the family that you grew up in. Your family of choice is defined as the group of people in your life that satisfy the typical role of family as your support system. Which is better? Does it matter?

Some of us have great relationships with the members of our family of origin and we encourage you to continue to embrace them. Love on them with everything you have. Be there to support one another through both good times and bad. For those of you who are not closely connected with your families of origin, we sincerely pray that you have people in your life that fulfill that role and that you have a support system comprised of wonderful people who uplift and encourage you! People with whom you can share both deep conversations and belly aching laughs!
