I got the invite and the “don’t bring anything” text. I made some suggestions of things I could bring and still got nowhere but I followed the golden rule of get-togethers:
Never. Show. Up. Empty-handed.
Your host isn’t being disingenuous when they say to just show up. I get it! It’s a common response and some people love to just bless people with a delicious spread that they’ve put together. There are some expert level hosts out there who have been marinating, cocktail designing, citronella-lighting, and cleaning behind closed doors to make things perfect for your visit. The least you can do is roll in with a little something to say thank you for having me!
So what makes a good hostess gift in the summertime? Glad you asked.
1. Fresh Flowers (In a Jar, Please)
Not a grocery store bouquet with the price tag still on it. Think wildflowers from a farmer’s market or cut blooms in a mason jar or small vase so your host doesn’t have to scramble for one while flipping burgers.
2. A Bottle, brew, or craft beverage
Wine is a classic offering, or step it up with a seasonal local selection:
· Craft cider or hard seltzers in a summer flavor
· A local brewery collection that they’ve probably never tried but will love
· You can’t lose by bringing their favourite mixer and making sure they are stocked
3. Small-Batch Candles
We’ve got our custom candle line and it’s a perfect contribution for your Host! Add a little personal thank you note and you’ve hit the target. Our current scents are Bellini, Vanilla Bourbon, Fresh Haven (Eucalyptus forward with hints of lemon & vanilla) & Citrus Glow. You can even customize your candle label to reflect the occasion.
4. Seasonal Treats They Don’t Have to Share
You know they’ve been cooking for everyone else. Gift them something indulgent for them:
· A box of artisan chocolates
· A jar of local honey or fancy jam
· A bakery pastry they can eat in peace the next morning
5. Summer Staples
· A cute lip balm & lotion set
· Mini body mist or cooling face spray
· A fun tea towel or picnic cloth
· A quirky bottle opener
It’s Not About Price - It’s About Being Thoughtful
You don’t need to spend a fortune. You just need to show you appreciate the effort it takes to host. A little gesture goes a long way and sets you apart from the folks who show up with nothing but an appetite. Say “Thank you” in words and a gifting gesture as soon as you arrive!
We were able to support a guest recently as they picked out a gift basket demonstrating their gratitude for hospitality they’d recently been blessed by. We love it and we’re happy to be part of your gratitude! If you showed up empty-handed it’s not too late to say thank you with an ‘after the event’ gift and get a couple gifts for the upcoming events in your life.
Swing by The Gift Designers or shop online, and get ready to show your hosts how meaningful their invite and company this summer are to you!
