Pausing to Remember

As November 11 approaches, we once again prepare to pause and remember those who gave so much for the freedoms we hold dear.

Working in a junior high school office means I’m surrounded by the buzz of students; their laughter, their energy, their endless questions. It’s a vibrant reminder of why remembrance matters: these young people get to dream freely because generations before them made great sacrifices.

In past Remembrance Day blogs for The Gift Designers, I’ve shared reflections about the beaches of Normandy and the quiet power of standing in places once marked by unimaginable courage. Those stories always take a new lens when I help lead school trips and watch as students learn, grow, and experience new places.

This year I was teary as I watched students link arms and sing while skipping towards the Vimy Monument. There’s something deeply humbling about watching young Canadians explore these historic places - curious, respectful, and often light-hearted. The ability to enjoy these sites, wander and remember, be carefree with our friends is all because of extraordinary bravery and sacrifice.

It’s in those moments I feel the meaning of remembrance most deeply. It’s not only about looking back, but about helping the next generation understand why we remember. Whether through storytelling, ceremonies, or moments of quiet reflection, we help carry the torch of gratitude forward.

There are many simple, meaningful ways to make November 11 special:

·         Attend a local ceremony - whether at school, in your community, or during the moment of silence at 11:00 a.m.

·      Visit a memorial such as     Calgary’s       Field of     Crosses    -  a breathtaking visual of remembrance and sacrifice.

·         Share stories - ask a veteran or family member about their memories, or explore historical letters and journals online.

·         Take a reflective walk - in nature, through your neighbourhood, or even during a family outing - and use that time to give quiet thanks.

At The Gift Designers, we’ve always believed in the power of connection - with one another, with our communities, and with our shared history. Remembrance Day embodies all of that.

So this year, wherever you find yourself, take a moment to pause. Remember those who served. Reflect on the peace we enjoy. And give thanks for the gift of freedom.

Lest we forget.
