Altruism, the principle, and moral practice of concern for the happiness of others, is a worthy notion that can sometimes get lost in translation. “Paying it forward” is so much more than just grabbing the tab, which is a lovely gesture, but have you considered the actual impact of it?

A single act of kindness can create an extreme ripple effect and act as a catalyst of sequential generosity, reaching far beyond individual intent. In plain terms, if you do it, its likely that the person behind you will be inspired to do it as well and here are some reasons why it is ultimately worth it:

1.   A friendly alternative: maybe someone helped you out, whether recently or eons ago, and you didn’t have the opportunity right then to return the gesture. Paying it forward can be an expression of your own personal generosity in gratitude of what others may have done for you.

2.   Build your community: in a time where isolation and exclusivity may be preferred, the idea and sense of community could be slipping through our fingers. Do what you can to remind yourself, and others, that community matters and we support one another.

3.   Good people still exist: has your faith in basic humanity been jaded? You are certainly not alone but a simple act of kindness can restore that. Whether you are offering your seat on the train to another or grabbing the coffee tab, you are planting a seed of faith that both grows into, and restores the hope that people still care about people.

4.   Doesn’t have to be big: our capacities to give are obviously at different levels so free yourself from the expectation that you have to make some grand, globe-saving gesture! The smallest thing can lift someone’s spirits for the day.

5.   Everyone can do it: even your littles. We know of a very special little girl who did not have money to give, but rather, gave her lunch snacks to someone who didn’t have as much. No doubt the person she gave to was grateful, but she also left feeling pretty great.

This is not a difficult concept to grasp. It is simple but holds such meaningful impact not only for those who receive but for those who give. Big gifts are great!
