Ball games, bike rides, beach time, bbqing, board games, pets, photography, puzzles, camping, collector’s items, and classic movies.
Each of these things represents an activity or item that was significant in my childhood because of my dad. We had a fairly simple life and looking back some of those simple things have become the dearest memories or hobbies I’ve continued.
I was fortunate to grow up in the Okanagan on a tiny little acreage with fruit trees. Our time living in B.C. was filled with a random selection of pets, so much time playing outside in the yard, or enjoying nearby beaches. I remember bike rides, playing catch, and being introduced to my Dad’s favourite classic movies.
My Dad is a collector and we got to join in on this hobby. While he primarily collected sports cards, I remember him helping us pick out superhero novelty cards, coins, and sticker books on top of a selection of our own sports cards.
We became more regular campers once we moved to Alberta and this hobby has only grown for my parents. During those childhood trips we got to enjoy exploring trails on foot or on bike. Campfire cuisine and the bliss of playing at a beach made for some memorable family times.
Our family has enjoyed many moments together thanks to my Dad’s hard work and time invested into these simple activities that helped to shape us. Father’s Day is coming and I hope you can take a minute to reflect on the highlights of your childhood and prepare to say thank you to your dad.
