Life of Pie

Life of Pie:

I’m a pie snob. I can’t help it! My whole life has featured delicious baking and premium pastries from my family’s kitchen. I’ve been so spoiled over the years that the novelty of homemade, fresh fruit, just out of the oven pies has worn off at times. For as long as I can remember my Mom has been making pies in some capacity. During my early childhood years, she supplied a number of fruit stands in the Okanagan with their pies and baking. After moving to Alberta my Mom rented a booth at the Millarville Farmer’s Market for 8 years and was known to sell out quickly! Regular customers could be seen jogging in, at a brisk pace, as soon as the market opened to ensure that they got their hands on their favourite kind of pie! Missing out on getting a pie could put a damper on your dinner plans and steal a bit of joy from your market experience.

Over the years our entire family has contributed to peeling fruit, pitting cherries, checking on the ovens, manning the market booth, and picking up ingredients at the store while Mom did the specialty work of rolling out the dough and her perfect pinching of the crust edges. It’s no easy task to put together 100+ pies each weekend as a primarily one-woman show!

The business never had a trendy name or catchy slogan to convince people to buy. “Heather’s Pies” sold themselves from the first bite to the fork scraping your plate to get the final crumbs. Often decorated with a pastry heart; there was love baked into every slice. As we celebrate Mother’s Day, I can say that life has been pretty sweet due in no small part to my Mom’s hard work over the years. She doesn’t make pie by the hundreds anymore but if you’re lucky she’ll have one baked up and ready to take home - but you might have to jog to get first dibs!
