I reflected today on the menagerie of pets my family has had over the years. Growing up we had many dogs and cats plus chickens, rabbits, a hedgehog, love birds, cockatiels, fish, and even peacocks at one point. I can confidently say that I have never met anyone who had peacocks as pets. To this day I can identify a peacock’s screech from afar. One of our most bizarre pet ownership moments entailed a summer road trip from Alberta to B.C. where we had a kennel full of month old kittens along for the trip. Their Mom had passed and so we were bottle feeding and caring for them. I’m sure people looked at us a bit odd when they heard that our family vacation included a bundle of baby cats.
It’s National Pet Day and I’d love to hear about your strangest family pet. Did you have an unorthodox pet or just one with some quirky habits? In the spirit of Random Acts of Kindness I would encourage you to consider giving to a local pet care agency or helping out with dog walks, perhaps dropping off pet food to a local animal rescue group.
