When you were younger, did you ever think about how your dad had the coolest stuff? I know I did. My dad had, and actually still has, this incredible record collection. I used to go through it when he wasn’t home and think to myself “I’m going to take my favorites with me when I move out someday!”. I never did, but that record collection is still in his basement and is one of the things that makes my dad super  cool!

All the dads I have known over the years seem to have some really cool stuff from really cool swiss army knives to vintage beer classes and leather jackets, or anything else you can think of. They of course acquire the essentials but the things that they “treasure” or consider “valuable”, are truly special. In addition to my dad’s record collection I was also fascinated by his shaving kit. It was different from my mother’s plethora of personal hygiene products. First of all it was kept in a pretty prestigious leather bag and each item inside was clean to the point of almost sparkling, and perfectly placed to ensure that everything fits. I have fond memories of sitting and watching him shave in the mirror. I am a girl, so I didn’t learn to shave my face, but still had the best times in the washroom with my dad while he got ready for work, or church, or some fancy event.

And then there was his car. Growing up my dad had this beautiful BMW that he kept in absolute mint condition. It wasn’t just the car that was cool, but all of the things that he had to keep it clean and maintain it that just put it all over the top. The car bag was just the coolest thing. It was filled with special cleaning cloths, conditioning sprays for the seats, air fresheners, little dust brushes and things that you wouldn’t even think of.

Dad probably doesn’t think about those kinds of things as much today, but from time to time I do. I think all of us, at some point in our lives, went through dad’s stuff and thought “I hope I can be this cool one day”.
